IBEC is a research institute covering most bioengineering fields, from basic research to medical applications, aiming to act as an international reference in this field. IBEC was established in 2005 by the Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Technical University of Catalonia and is located at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). IBEC hosts around 350 researchers and technicians, which are part of its own staff or are associated. IBEC was awarded three times with the Severo Ochoa Research Excellence Award. IBEC is member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) formed by the alliance of seven top research centres in Barcelona. On 2015 and 2019 IBEC was awarded the “HR Excellence in Research” award from the European Commission. The “Nanoscale Bioelectrical Characterization” group lead by Prof. Gomila is a multidisciplinary research group involving physicists, engineers, biologists and chemists focussed in the development of experimental set ups based on Scanning Probe Microscopy to measure and model the nanoelectrical properties of biological matter (www.ibecbarcelona.eu/nanobioelec). The “Bacterial infections: antimicrobial therapies” group lead by Dr. Torrents is a microbiology group aiming to investigate new antimicrobial therapies and strategies to combat bacterial infections using nanomedicines and nanotechnology techniques.
